Landline number portability from conventional to VoIP telephony

Everything you need to know

Number portability allows you to transfer your landline telephone number from a traditional provider to a VoIP provider without changing your number. This is particularly useful for businesses wanting to upgrade their telecommunication infrastructure while maintaining their identity and customer calls.

In this article, we'll explore the steps required for number portability, the necessary conditions, and the benefits of VoIP telephony compared to traditional solutions.

What is number portability?

Number portability is the capability to keep your phone number when switching from one telephone provider to another. Whether it's your home or office number, you can switch providers and retain your number by submitting a portability request.

3 steps to port your phone number

To port your number, just follow these three simple steps:

  1. Contact your new provider and submit a number portability request. This request also serves as a termination notice for your current provider. Thus, you don't need to inform your current provider.
  2. Ensure you submit the correct documentation and information, such as a recent phone bill or ownership certificate from your current provider with accurate details.
  3. Remember that any existing services linked to the number with your previous provider will be lost upon completion of the porting process (e.g., Internet connection). To use VoIP telephony, you need an active Internet connection.

How long does number portability take?

For landline telephony, portability can be completed within one business day once your current provider accepts the request. Providers usually confirm your request via phone to ensure it's genuine.

Once confirmed, the process typically takes 15 minutes to 2 hours to update the systems of all telecom providers for correct number routing.

When is a number portability request denied?

Your current provider can reject your portability request in three cases:

  1. The VAT number on the portability request doesn't match the VAT number registered with your current provider.
  2. The number is inactive or belongs to another subscriber.
  3. The number belongs to a specific number range that cannot be ported individually. In such cases, the entire range must be ported to the new provider.
